Lockheed Federal Credit Union Hosts Financial Seminar for Teens

Palmdale High Students to Receive Money Management Education

Burbank, Calif. (April 25, 2007) – Lockheed Federal Credit Union (LFCU), one of the largest credit unions in the nation, is sponsoring a Teen Financial Literacy Seminar from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Palmdale High School in Palmdale. The seminar focuses on teaching Palmdale High students and parents about money management.

Award-winning financial literacy speaker and author Sally Taylor will talk to students about:

  • True costs of credit cards
  • Checkbook management and bill payment
  • Compounded interest
  • ATM fees
  • Identity theft avoidance
  • Credit reports
  • Financial goals

Taylor will also discuss how a pizza can cost $93, how to plan for the future and maintain finances, as well as evaluating needs vs. wants.

“Teenagers can become overwhelmed with credit card offers and college loans. It’s important that they have an understanding of money management so that they can make financial plans,” LFCU President and CEO Dave Styler said. “If teens receive the tools and education to reach financial success, it will impact the rest of their lives.”

Each student will receive a copy of “Money Talks,” a book by Taylor, which details the discussion topics, and outlines steps to manage money and begin building wealth.

“Learning about money is crucial to living a successful life. Research shows that if you learn how to manage your money, you’ll be more successful in other aspects of your life,” Taylor said. “You’re likely to get better-paying jobs, become homeowners, and plan for retirement. You’re also likely to be healthier and happier.”

Since 2001, Taylor has conducted seminars and discussions nationwide, working to empower students so that they can achieve financial success. Her credits include three national awards.
